HEADSTRONG WORKS FOR THE JUST A TROT FUTURITY WITH RADIANT SILVER
The Youth Challenge had finally arrived, with the first leg due to run in a matter of days. It was practically the Triple Crown for juveniles, and it would certainly see the horses who would go on to run in next year's Crown or Tiara. The first race, the Just A Trot Futurity, was nine furlongs on dirt and for two year olds only. It had drawn a field of eight, strong young thoroughbreds and Headstrong was one of them. The fiery filly was very strong willed, and she would fight to the finish to win this race. She was coming off a win, which had taken place more than a month ago now, so she was in good shape coming into this race. But then, so was everyone else.
Rizz trotted quickly on the dirt track as she warmed up her muscles, head tossing and snorting and tail flicking to vent her frustration at not being allowed to just run right away. Marissa ignored the filly's antics, her mind wandering instead to the race. The best two year olds on the dirt were running in this race, and they would need to be their absolute best to have any chance of winning. That was why Rizz had had five weeks off racing, so that she could rest and train hard and rest for the next three races in particular. In that time the filly had filled out some, with muscles beginning to bulge in places on the slender thoroughbred. Her hind quarters, in particular, were well developed. Headstrong's workout times had improved, too. She was definitely beginning to come into her own this end of the year, so her three year old season looked bright.
Marissa's heel's gave a gentle nudge to Rizz's sides, and the thoroughbred launched into canter. In gate one would be Everyday Smile. The Euphoria filly would always hold a special place in Star Thoroughbreds' hearts, but they would still strive to beat her. She had placed second behind Rizz in the Antarctic Derby, but had then gone on the win in the A Lot To Live Up To Stakes series the following week. Her record was very impressive, at 9-6-3-0, and the filly would be a strong contender as always. Next, in gate two, was another horse bred by Star Thoroughbreds. Limited Edition had been sold as a weanling, and was now owned by Stride Of Perfection Stables. With a record of 14-6-6-2, he was certainly making a name for himself now. He'd raced last week and won the October Juvenile Dirt Faceoff.
The next gate would hold yet another horse bred by Star Thoroughbreds. Battle Wings was sired by Akuma Battlecry, and like Everyday Smile she would always have a place in the hearts of Star Thoroughbreds. She, like Headstrong, had last run in the Antarctic Derby, placing third. She had not won a race since May, but that would no doubt mean she would want the win that much more - just as Headstrong had five weeks ago. Overall her record stood at 13-4-5-3.
